Lewis on Knowledge Ascriptions

نویسنده

چکیده

David Lewis’s primary contribution to the theory of knowledge is his account of knowledge ascription, which integrates an elegant version of relevant alternatives theory with a detailed version of contextualism. His account is prefigured in his discussion of accommodation in “Scorekeeping in a Language Game” (1979), and forms the central topic of his “Elusive Knowledge” (1996). I will review his account (§1), and then discuss some epistemic (§2) and semantic (§3) questions arising. This will be a friendly critique: I am sympathetic with the outlines of Lewis’s contextualist relevant alternatives theory, but would amend some details.

RECENT WORK Recent Work: Dispositions

Controversy about dispositions ranges over the following four domains: (i) the semantics of disposition ascriptions; (ii) the distinction between dispositional and categorical properties; (iii) the metaphysical status of dispositions, i.e. their fundamentality, naturalness and intrinsicness; and (iv) the various dispositional analyses of philosophical notions like causation, laws, modality, cou...

Background Default Knowledge and Causality Ascriptions

A model is defined that predicts an agent’s ascriptions of causality (and related notions of facilitation and justification) between two events in a chain, based on background knowledge about the normal course of the world. Background knowledge is represented by nonmonotonic consequence relations. This enables the model to handle situations of poor information, where background knowledge is not...

Speaking My Mind: Expression and Self-Knowledge

Self-ascriptions of mental states, whether in speech or thought, seem to have a unique status. Suppose I make an utterance of the form “I have a terrible headache”. This is a self-ascription of a mental state. It is true or false, depending on whether I am indeed having a terrible headache or not, which is a contingent matter. However, when self-ascriptions like this are made from a first perso...

Epistemic comparativism: a contextualist semantics for knowledge ascriptions

Knowledge ascriptions seem context sensitive. Yet it is widely thought that epistemic contextualism does not have a plausible semantic implementation. We aim to overcome this concern by articulating and defending an explicit contextualist semantics for ‘know,’ which integrates a fairly orthodox contextualist conception of knowledge as the elimination of the relevant alternatives, with a fairly ...
